How I built this site

Other than purchasing the domain name, I created this site using free (and in many cases, open-source) solutions, namely:

This may seem like a lot of stuff and work, but it’s not bad once you familiarize yourself with the working parts, and the amount of effort required is fairly commensurate with how much you already know about these things and perhaps even more so how much you want to customize things (e.g., going beyond what a given theme offers “out of the box”).

  1. Be sure to check out the URL section of this page. ↩︎

  2. Hugo can be largely handled via blogdown such that your interaction with Hugo is minimal unless you want customize things like I did. Hugo has good documentation and is not hard to learn/use, though it has its quirks like anything. ↩︎

  3. I tend to prefer a more minimalist but still highly functional theme, and the DoIt theme strikes a nice balance with that in my view. The spectrum of available Hugo themes should satisfy most. Note also the DoIt theme is itself based on the LoveIt , LeaveIt , and KeepIt themes. ↩︎
